Why branding should not be your priority right now
I know this is going to be controversial and push someone’s buttons here.
I already see a crowd of outraged designers and brand strategists feeling compelled to comment and bring me back to the right path.
Are you ready? Take a breath.
Once upon a time there were two nerds playing with circuit boards in a garage; I’m talking history now: Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Apple.
On April 1, 1976, Apple Computer Company was founded by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne. What was their first focus? Create innovation, something that didn’t exist before. They were ambitious. Their product was not just good, it was remarkable. Apple I was born. Then Apple II followed and Apple III in 1980. On December 12, 1980, Apple went public, generating over $100 million. Apple's market cap was $1.778 billion at the end of its first day of trading!
Up until then, no one had been seriously thinking of branding. Finally the Macintosh arrived in 1984 with the famous TV commercial that established for the first time what Apple was really about, consolidating their image on the market.
It’s curious how so many small businesses are obsessed with branding. They would gladly spend tens of thousands dollars before even getting there, to their first million or half a million for that matter; when all they SHOULD think about is: how do I grow my business? How do I improve my sales skills? How do I attract more clients? How do I make myself visible? Because, your brand is YOU. Your brand is the promise you make to your customers. BE the person you say you are and put yourself out there! No one will do it for you.
And yet, you prefer to hire designers and brand strategists, you keep delegating and procrastinating, hoping that someone else’s work could replace YOUR OWN work.
Why? Because it’s easier, less confronting.
Now your brand is “perfect”, you can sit down and wait for clients to find you, to be impressed by your logo, your fancy fonts and phantasmagorical website. Well sorry to disappoint you, but I can guarantee you that won’t happen.
And while you’re waiting, your competitors are online, solving their clients’ problems.
You don’t have to rely on somebody else to explain you who YOU are. You know that.
I help innovative and courageous entrepreneurs build Authority in their marketing and communicate their unique Identity, through systemisation.
The question is: are you willing to DO the work?
Are you prepared to do whatever it takes? If the answer is yes, reach out and book a call.
